KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Council of Former Elected Representatives (MUBARAK) advised voters to be more careful, rational and not to be prejudiced in choosing the party to rule in the 14th General Election.

MUBARAK deputy president Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sulaiman said in a statement today that voters should be cautious with all the information obtained especially those viralled on the social media ahead of the GE14.

"The existence of sophisticated technology enables information to be disseminated quickly and without limit through various social media platforms such as WhatsApps, Telegram and Facebook.

"Unfortunately most of the information that is being transmitted through this platform is feared to be false or half truths and some (people) are deceived," he said.

MUBARAK is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) comprising former MPs, State Assemblymen and senators from Barisan Nasional (BN) parties.

The strategy of using false news or half-truth took place widely in the United States' presidential election campaign and the Brexit Referendum in Britain, both in 2016.

Abdul Rahman said the opposition was seen to be overly desirous and were campaigning in do-or-die manner to overthrow the BN government that has ruled the country for more than 60 years.

"We have seen, felt and known the services and achievement records and the plans of the ruling party, while the opposition's ability is not yet known ... if anything, only on paper and still vague.

"So, before we regret it, we must be careful and cautious when we vote,\" he said.

The Election Commission (EC) sets the polling day for GE14 on May 9, while the initial polling date is May 5.
