Raja Ahmad Soufi's UMNO membership suspension lifted

KUALA BERANG, May 4 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today announced the readmission of Raja Ahmad Soufi Sulaiman whose UMNO membership was previously suspended for violating party ethics.

The announcement was made by Najib, who is also UMNO president and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, during a "Meet the Prime Minister" event in Hulu Terengganu today.

On Jan 30, UMNO's disciplinary board had also announced a six-year suspension of all Raja Ahmad Soufi's posts in UMNO, including as Kampung Langgar UMNO branch chief with immediate effect after he was found to have violated the use of publications and mass media, electronic or the Internet as stipulated under UMNO members' code of ethics, since September last year.

Earlier, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman, who is also the state UMNO Liaison Committee chairman, in his speech, called on the top leadership to reconsider Raja Ahmad Soufi's request for his membership to be reinstated owing to his commitment to ensuring the party's victory in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Meanwhile, Raja Ahmad Soufi, when met by reporters after the announcement, expressed his relief and thanked the party president for lifting the suspension.

"I admit that the way I used social sites were outrageous and I am grateful for the party president to listen to the grassroots' wish by lifting my suspension. Despite being suspended from the party, it didn't diminish my commitment to ensure the party's victory," said Raja Ahmad Soufi who has been an UMNO member for 20 years.
