UMNO sacks Daim, Rafidah, probes Rais over indiscipline
PUTRAJAYA, May 5 (Bernama) -- UMNO has expelled two party veterans and placed another under investigation over indiscipline.
Secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said today former ministers Tun Daim Zainuddin and Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz were sacked yesterday for supporting the political opposition and criticising UMNO.
He also said that Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim was under investigation.
Tengku Adnan said the letters of expulsion were sent to Daim and Rafidah yesterday as provided for in the party constitution.
"When she (Rafidah) went on stage at an opposition rally, I immediately asked for the letter of expulsion to be sent to her, as well as to Tun Daim," he said to reporters after a look at the early voting in progress at the Putrajaya District Police headquarters here.
"I informed them that I checked on them myself and the information was not from hearsay. When I received the photographs, I asked for the letters to be sent to them," he said.
Tengku Adnan said that as party veterans, they should know that they could be expelled from the party if they resorted to what they did.
"Perhaps they wanted us to expel them and they can talk what they like about UMNO. They must remember that they and the country would not be where they are now without UMNO and the Barisan Nasional (BN)," he said. Tengku Adnan, who is also BN secretary-general, said it was sad that these UMNO veterans had supported the opposition and criticised the government.
"When they were with us, all of us supported them. It is not that they did not have problems. All of them had problems. We have abided by the principle of loyalty to leaders and adhered to the instructions of our leaders.
"When they were with us, we corrected one another because we were together. Today, they have left the group and have made accusations against us. That is not right and not fair," he said.
