Make contributions of past leaders the basis for country's development - Najib
PEKAN, May 6 (Bernama) -- The contributions of past leaders should not only be remembered but also used as a basis to drive the nation to a higher level, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Najib, who is also BN chairman, said as the next generation, the generation today must use what has been laid as foundation to a higher level that is recognised worldwide.
Citing the contributions and struggle of the second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, in spearheading rural development by opening Felda schemes and building roads between Kuantan and Segamat as examples, Najib said all these would be meaningless if there was no continuity.
"We cannot live merely on memories and nostalgia, and the present generation should not do this.
"We must take development to a greater level, and only with this attitude will we place our country on par with other great nations," he said.
Najib, who is also BN candidate for Pekan parliamentary seat, was speaking at a gathering with the people of Batu 8 Lepar here today.
The event was attended by about 2,000 residents as well as the candidate for the Pulau Manis state seat Datuk Khairuddin Mahmud.
Najib said the present generation cannot take the country backwards but must continue what has been started, the country needs a political party which has a history of developing the country.
He said BN has been proven to be the party which has successfully developed the country.
If we look at the behaviour of one or two people on the other side (the opposition), we cannot be confident that they will look after our interests, especially the people in the rural areas, the interests of Islam and the interests of the Malays, he said.
At the event, the prime minister also approved the construction of a new mosque in the village, but did not state the amount allocated.
