Thaipusam will be a public holiday in Kedah if BN wins two thirds majority in state
SUNGAI PETANI, May 7 (Bernama) --Thaipusam will be made a public holiday in Kedah if Barisan Nasional (BN) retains Kedah with a two-thirds majority in the 14th General Election (GE14) on May 9.
Kedah BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said the state government had previously announced a 'cuti peristiwa' (occasional holiday) in Kedah in conjunction with Thaipusam.
"Our target for GE14 is to obtain a two-thirds majority in the state assembly, and today, I promise to the Indians in Kedah that if this target is achieved, we will make amendments so that the Thaipusam celebration will be declared a public holiday," he told reporters after attending an event with the Indian community at Taman Bandar Baru Sungai Lalang, here, today.
Commenting on the GE14 campaign which only had less than 48 hours to go, the Kedah menteri besar said the party's machinery was working harder than usual until the end of the campaigning period at midnight tomorrow.
"I myself had to leave my constituency (where I am contesting) to meet voters all over the state, to urge the people to make an informed decision and not repeat the mistake of choosing another party which only 'appears' (becomes active) once every five years."
Commenting further, Ahmad Bashah said based on survey results he had obtained, people's support for BN was very encouraging, and it was possible for the coalition to form the state government on May 9.
