Malay 'tsunami' will not occur in GE14 - Najib

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is confident that the Malay tsunami which is often played up the Opposition, will not occur in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Najib, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said this was based on the fact that the huge crowd which turned up at Opposition political programmes were only concentrated in non-Malay areas.

"If we look at the talks by the Opposition, they are mostly in the urban areas, and many of those present are non-Malays, mostly DAP supporters, and we know they also use buses to bring supporters from outside, they are not only local supporters."

"I always say I do not need to have a large number of attendees (at events), but I want local voters, locals to attend (the BN programmes), so if we get 10,000 for example who are locals, it's better than if we get 20,000, but mostly outsiders," he said during the 'Mandat' talk-show which was broadcast live on TV3 tonight.

The one-hour programme was hosted by Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian and Assoc Prof Azmi Hassan.

Najib, when asked of the possibility of a Malay tsunami on May 9, similar to that of the Chinese tsunami in the 2013 General Election said what was happening at the moment was Tsunami 'Fitnah' (defamation) which had forced BN to explain the true situation to the public.

The prime minister said Malaysian politics was based on a mature democracy, and the debate should be based on track record, performance, policies, agenda, manifestos and roadmaps.

However, said Najib, the Opposition unfortunately did not have any powerful weapon to face the Government with other than by using slander and politics of hatred.

"We take the example of their manifesto, it has not got any good response, neither any recognition by international bodies, by rating agencies and so on. No one talks about their manifesto."

"But they take BN's manifesto seriously, meaning we have an agenda, we have plans and we have proven that over the last five years (since GE13) we have been able to fulfill up to 99.4 per cent of our promises, that's very high. In some instances, we even exceeded our targets," he said.

Meanwhile, Najib said the election was not only about people fulfilling their obligations as voters, but it was rather to determine the country's destiny.

Hence, he said the voters should think carefully before choosing between the BN government, which has a track record of more than 60 years in governing the country, or the Opposition, which brings much risk, and uncertainty.

"First of all, if they choose the Opposition, there is likely to be a serious split, they will not be a stable government because they have been hostile against each other for decades, secondly, they (Opposition parties) all have different ideologies and thirdly, Tun Dr Mahathir himself said they cannot implement their manifesto, and fourth, speeches given by DAP (leaders) clearly reveal their real intentions, that all this is merely a political ploy," he said.

He reminded the people not to be taken in by sentiments of 'changing the government' as played-up by the Opposition, as the changes which would be brought by them would not necessarily benefit the country.

"We cannot assume that change will bring about good things. For instance, the Arab Spring, they claimed they were changing the government considered to be a dictatorship in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, and so on. These countries have been destroyed because the youths believed in bringing about change, but there was no true direction of change."

"So let's change for the better, and here, I see the BN agenda is better than the Opposition's. That's why we have implemented the national transformation policy, so we transform the country without changing the leadership," he said.
