Give BN a chance to provide check and balance - Teng
GEORGE TOWN, May 7 (Bernama) -- Penang voters are urged to give Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates a chance to provide a check and balance in the state legislative assembly.
State BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow said a truly democratic system needed an equally effective opposition to provide check and balance therefore, BN's candidates should be given a chance in the 14th General Election (GE14).
"Two more days before polling on Wednesday, we humbly urge you to vote for us to send our representatives into the State Assembly for check and balance, to save Penang."
"If Penang Barisan Nasional eventually continues to be the opposition in Penang, I believe we can play our role effectively and with quality because, for the last few years, we have done that, relying on facts, figures and with rationale to highlight issues faced by Penangites," he told a press conference attended by BN's candidates from various constituencies here today.
He added that the Penang people had experienced the Lim Guan Eng Government which had had absolute power and there was no check and balance which led to politicking continuing even after the General Election.
"When their policies fail, they just resort to blaming either the previous Government or the Federal Government, including the frequent floods in Penang, which caused the people to continually suffer losses and damage," he said.
After more than a week of campaigning, Teng said among the feedbacks he received was Penang people had been increasingly suffering from numerous problems and issues including floods, housing, economic, traffic and environmental issues for the past 10 years.
Therefore, he said it was important for every voter to be calm and think carefully whether they wanted to live with all these problems for another five years.
Among the issues raised by Penang BN were the RM6.3 billion Undersea Tunnel Project, Peel Avenue controversial land sale, Sri Tanjong Pinang two (STP2) reclamation in Gurney Drive, hillslope development and the state government's failure to gazette Pulau Jerejak as a permanent forest reserve.
However, Teng who is also the state Gerakan chairman said he had assembled a new team, comprising experienced, young members, including women who were capable of providing a good check and balance to save Penang and to fight for a better Penang.
BN is contesting in all the 13 parliamentary and 40 state seats in Penang in GE14.
