LANGKAWI, May 8 (Bernama) -- At 93, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should not be burdened with the responsibilities and duties of an elected representative, said Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Langkawi parliamentary seat Datuk Nawawi Ahmad.

Nawawi, who is facing the former prime minister in the 14th General Election (GE14), said the duties of an elected representative should be undertaken by a younger candidate.

"We love Tun (Dr) Mahathir and we feel sorry for him. We should not burden him anymore," he said when addressing about 1,000 fishermen at the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority Complex here today.

He said BN had been carrying out development in Langkawi even after Dr Mahathir stepped down as the prime minister 15 years ago.

We don't want Langkawi to fall into the hands of others. If the people do not choose BN, this can affect all the development initiatives initiated by Tun Mahathir himself," he said.

Nawawi is defending the seat in a three-cornered fight with Dr Mahathir, who is standing as a PKR-PPBM candidate, and Zubir Ahmad of PAS.
