Malaysians make a bee-line for polling centres nationwide
KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 (Bernama) -- Democracy in Malaysia is well and truly alive as Malaysians thronged polling centres to cast their votes in the country's 14th General Election (GE14) with no reports of untoward incidents thus far.
According to the Election Commission (EC), 36 per cent of registered voters had cast their ballots, as at 11 am.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor cast their ballots at the Pekan parliamentary polling station at Sekolah Sains Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, Pekan.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman was also seen helping his mother, Tun Rahah Mohamed Noah, who is wheelchair-bound.
Najib, who is defending the Pekan parliamentary seat, which he held since 1976, faces Mohamad Zahid Mat Arip of PKR, Capt (R) Ahiatudin Daud of PAS and Datuk Mohd Kadir Sainudin of Independent.
Other political leaders who cast their votes this morning were UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, who is also Rembau BN candidate and Pasir Puteh BN candidate Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is contesting on a PKR ticket in the Langkawi parliamentary seat, and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali cast their ballots at SK Titi Gajah, Alor Setar.
Royalty, national athletes and artistes did not miss out the opportunity to perform their rights as voters.
Among them were Tengku Puan of Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, pop ethnic singer Noraniza Idris and national diver Pandelela Rinong Pamg.
Bukit Besi BN candidate Roslee Daud, attracted a lot of attention when he showed up at a polling station at SK Bukit Besi, Dungun with both his wives.
