Woman dies while waiting to vote




DUNGUN, May 9 (Bernama) -- A woman collapsed and died while waiting in a queue to vote at the polling station at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pulau Serai in the general election today.

Rokiah Sulung, 54, from Kampung Pelandang collapsed at 8.20 am and was pronounced dead by a medical officer.

Her eldest daughter, Nurzita Md Nur, 36, who had accompanied her to the station at about 8 am, said Rokiah had suffered from high blood pressure.

"My mother was in the queue in Stream Two while I was in Stream Four. The people in the queue, alerted me after she fell, and I immediately ran to her. When I reached her, she was still conscious. She took several breaths and was pronounced dead by the medical officer," Nurzita told reporters at her house in Kampung Pulau Serai here.

Nurzita said her mother would be buried at the Kampung Pulau Serai Muslim Cemetery after the 'asar' prayers.

Dungun District Police chief Supt Baharudin Abdullah, when contacted by Bernama, confirmed the incident.
