Polling eases nationwide in late afternoon
KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 (Bernama) -- Polling eased nationwide in the late afternoon, with 62 per cent of the registered electors having cast their votes by 2 pm.
The majority of the electors exercised their right in the morning as soon as the polling stations opened at 8 am.
Apart from the two polling stations in Kuching that closed early after the voting process was completed, 20 of the 522 polling stations in Pahang were also closed.
Some of the ballot boxes from several polling stations in the Puncak Borneo parliamentary constituency have been brought to the vote-tallying centre at the hall of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Siburan, Jalan Kuching-Serian, near Kuching.
Among the leaders seen voting today were DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, at Sekolah Menengah (SM) Confucian in Penang; Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, at SMK Bentong and former Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah, at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Jati, Ipoh.
Among the many who turned up to vote today was a former private sector employee, Halilah Harun, 55, a disabled person, who exercised her right at SK Setiawangsa in the federal capital.
Accompanied by her husband and children, Halilah, said he hoped for the best for the leaders.
Meanwhile, in Kedah, Hashimah Hussin alias Hashim, whose legs had been amputated due to diabetes, exercised her right at SK Telok Jamat near Pokok Sena.
At a press conference, Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah reminded voters not to be alarmed by messages that attempted to cause panic.
