Najib retains Pekan parliamentary seat for 10th term
PEKAN, May 10 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak retained the Pekan parliamentary seat for the 10th term in the 14th general election, polling 43,854 votes to beat his three challengers.
He obtained a majority of 24,859 votes, higher than the 35,613 secured in the 13th general election, in 2013.
Najib staved off the challenge from Capt (Rtd) Ahiatudin Daud of PAS (18,995 votes), Mohamad Zahid Mat Arip of PKR (7,662) and independent candidate Datuk Kadir Sainudin (103). Kadir lost his deposit.
A total of 81.3 per cent of the 88,899 eligible voters went to the polls. There were 1,393 spoilt votes.
The result of the election was announced by Returning Officer Mohd Yusli Ibrahim Mohd Yunus at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Convention Hall here early today.
The BN candidates for the four state seats within the Pekan parliamentary seat also retained their seats.
Datuk Khairuddin Mahmud retained Pulau Manis when he garnered 8,282 seats, beating Zainuddin Noh of PAS (948) and Abu Bakar Lebai Sudin of PKR (2,101).
Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali retained Peramu Jaya when he secured 15,433 votes to beat Salim Abd Majid of PKR-PPBM (2,644) and Abu Kassim Manaf of PAS (8,251).
Datuk Mohd Fakhruddin Mohd Ariff retained Bebar by securing 8,172 votes and defeated Mohd Nazhar Othman of PAS (2,452) and Afif Syirol Abdul Rahman of PKR-PPBM (968).
Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Harun retained Chini by obtaining 10,027 votes to beat Mohd Fadhil Noor Abdul Karim of PAS (5,405) and Mohamad Razali Ithnain of PKR-PPBM (1065).
