BN to form govt in Pahang
KUANTAN, May 10 (Bernama) -- Pahang Barisan Nasional (BN) will be able to form the next state government with a simple majority after winning 25 of the 42 state seats in the 14th General Election (GE14).
The state seats it won were in Jelai, Padang Tengku, Cheka, Benta, Dong, Pulau Tawar, Inderapura, Lepar, Sungai Lembing, Pulau Manis, Peramu Jaya, Bebar, Chini, Kuala Sentul, Jenderak, Kerdau, Lanchang, Kuala Semantan, Pelangai, Guai, Kemayan, Bukit Ibam, Muadzam Shah, Tioman and Batu Talam.
Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob managed to retain his Pelangai state seat for the eighth consecutive term by a majority of 2,312 votes after defeating PKR candidate Nor Haizan Abu Hasan who won 3,098 votes. Meanwhile PAS candidate Zaharin Osman received 1,817 votes.
Pahang Umno Communications deputy chief Datuk Seri Mohamad Sharkar Shamsuddin also managed to retain the Lanchang state seat with a 3,725-vote majority after defeating PKR candidate Abas Awang who obtained 5,099 votes.
Hasan Omar from PAS received 4,836 votes while independent Mohd Khaidir Ahmad managed only 80 votes and lost his deposit.
The BN lost the following state seats - Luit, Chenor, Jengka, Panching, Tahan and Damak to PAS.
Meanwhile Syed Hamid Syed Mohamed from PAS managed to reclaim the Kuala Semantan state seat from Amanah.
PKR managed to maintain its dominance in Semambu and Teruntum, while DAP retained the Tanah Rata, Bilut, Ketari, Dun Sabai, Triang and Tras state seats.
In the previous election, BN won 30 out of the 42 state seats in Pahang. The DAP obtained seven seats, while the PKR and PAS two seats each. Amanah managed to get one seat.
Pahang BN was affected by the political tsunami this time, winning only nine out of 14 parliamentary constituencies namely Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Jerantut, Paya Besar, Pekan, Maran, Kuala Krau, Bera and Rompin.
The surprise defeat was that of MCA president and Bentong MP Liow Tiong Lai who was defeated by DAP's Wong Tack by a 2,032-vote majority. Wong received 23,684 votes.
DAP managed to retain Raub, PKR Indera Mahkota and Kuantan, while Amanah took the Temerloh seat.
