Government to review contracts not in favour of Malaysia - Lim

PETALING JAYA, May 12 (Bernama) -- All contracts that are not in favour or do not benefit Malaysia will be reviewed, said newly-appointed Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Lim said his main focus would be helping Malaysians and ensuring their rights, job opportunities and businesses were protected.

"That would be the main consideration. The focus would still be helping those who find it very hard to make ends meet and how to make their life a bit easier," he told a press conference after Pakatan Harapan (PH) meeting at Menara Yayasan Selangor here today.

Lim said he would look in terms of abolishing Goods and Services Tax (GST), maintaining 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) payments, and (subsidising) fuel prices.

On his appointment as the first Chinese to helm the Ministry of Finance after 44 years, Lim said: "I don't consider myself as a Chinese, I am Malaysian. I did not know it has been 44 years, thank you for counting for me."

Earlier, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad named three senior ministers in his new Cabinet and announced the formation of a Council of Elders made up of a group of eminent persons to advice the Government on financial matters during the transitional period.

Besides Lim, who is also DAP Secretary-General, the other two senior ministers are Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who was appointed as Home Affairs Minister and Amanah President Mohamad Sabu as Defence Minister.

The Council of Elders is made up of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, former Petronas President and Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Hassan Merican, tycoon Tan Sri Robert Kuok, economist Prof Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram, and former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz.
