Investments should benefit the people - Melaka exco

MELAKA, May 16 (Bernama) -- The leadership of the Melaka government aims to ensure local and foreign investments in the state will provide economic spillovers to the people.

Industry, Commerce and Investment State Executive Councillor (exco) Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen said the government would strategise Melaka´s economy in an inclusive manner to ensure that it would improve, along with the people´s living standards.

"We only talk about the statistics, the highest investments and the numerous industrial areas, when we should actually emphasise on how the people would benefit from the investments, the industrialisation and commerce.

"If it only benefits certain parties, we will not allow it, and we will look for alternatives that will help to generate the people´s income in the face of the rising cost of living, " he told reporters here, today.

Mohd Rafiq said the government would also review the foreign investments approved by the former government which were viewed as loss-making.

"Investments which involves selling large parcels of land to foreigners, or those involving massive loans which increased the state debt...those are not investments," he said.

Speaking on his appointment as the state exco earlier today, the Paya Rumput State Assemblyman said he would be focusing on areas which could potentially improve the youth´s economy, especially those living in the rural areas, through entrepreneurship, empowering education and sports development.
