Dr Hilmi relinquishes all his posts in UMNO, BN
GEORGE TOWN, May 18 (Bernama) -- Balik Pulau UMNO division chief Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya has relinquished all his posts in UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) effective today after the party's humiliating defeat in the 14th General Election (GE14).
Dr Hilmi announced his decision in a statement issued here today.
He said Balik Pulau UMNO division chief post now would be shouldered by his deputy Datuk Dr Muhamad Farid Saad.
"Now it is time for me to withdraw from the political arena and here I ask for forgiveness if I have erred and made mistakes during my term as a representative of the people in the Balik Pulau parliamentary constituency and at the federal level.
"I am just an ordinary human being who have tried my best to provide the best service to the people," he said.
Dr Hilmi, however, explained that he remained an UMNO member and was willing to assist all parties in the interest of the people.
"I hope UMNO will rise again and continue to defend the fate of the Malays and all levels of society in this country," he said.
In GE14 on May 9, Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik defeated Dr Hilmi who was incumbent of the Balik Pulau parliamentary seat and PAS candidate Muhammad Imran Muhammad Sa'ad with a majority of 6,464 votes.
Muhammad Bakhtiar garnered 25,471 votes while Dr Hilmi received 19,007 votes and Muhammad Imran won 5,298 votes.
In the GE14, BN only managed to win the Sungai Dua and Permatang Berangan state seats as well as the Tasek Gelugor and Kepala Batas parliamentary seats.
