Need to rid 'rural poor' stigma, says New Rural Development Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- Titiwangsa MP Rina Mohd Harun who has been named the Rural Development Minister in the new cabinet, wants to focus on improving the economy and the well-being of the rural population.

Still in shock over her appointment, Rina is committed to changing the perception of people who often associate rural areas with poverty.

"When rural areas are mentioned, they are thought of as poor.

"I want to develop and bring about economic vibrance and advancement in the rural areas as only then can there be greater benefits and prosperity for the people," she told reporters after opening the Kampung Baru Ramadan Bazaar 2018.

The PKR Srikandi Chief said that she was in disbelief over her new position but was thankful that the Pakatan Harapan leadership had faith in her.

"This appointment comes with great trust, I hope to be given the opportunity and support by the people," she said.

At the 14th General Election, Rina beat Barisan Nasional (BN) incumbent Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani who was also former Deputy Finance Minister, and Mohamad Noor Mohamad from PAS in a three-cornered fight.
