Sultan of Selangor consents to Azmin becoming Federal Minister

SHAH ALAM, May 21 (Bernama) --The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has consented to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali holding the post of Minister of Economic Affairs in the Federal Government.

The sultan's private secretary, Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani, said His Royal Highness gave the consent after Mohamed Azmin informed him that he had agreed to take up the portfolio.

According to Mohamad Munir, the Menteri Besar made the decision after a discussion with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on the scope of work and jurisdiction of the new ministry.

"Mohamed Azmin, however, will remain as Selangor Menteri Besar for now, to facilitate a smooth and organised transition of power to the new menteri besar.

"In the meantime, Mohamed Azmin also has to submit a list of candidates for the new Selangor Menteri Besar for the consideration and consent of the Sultan before the appointment can be made," he said in a statement today.

Mohamad Munir said Mohamed Azmin will resign as Selangor Menteri Besar once the Sultan appoints the new head of the state administration.

The procedure, he said, was in line with the Constitution of Selangor 1959.

Last Friday, Dr Mahathir announced a list of 13 Cabinet ministers, including Mohamed Azmin as the Minister of Economic Affairs.

Mohamed Azmin, 54, who is also PKR deputy president, was sworn in as Selangor Menteri Besar for the second term on May 11. He was first sworn in on Sept 23, 2014.

Two Selangor representatives tipped to replace Mohamed Azmin as the menteri besar are Sungai Tua state assemblyman Amirudin Shari and Seri Setia state assemblyman Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin.
