State constitution will be amended to limit CM's tenure to two terms - Penang CM

GEORGE TOWN, May 23 (Bernama) -- The Penang state constitution will be amended to limit the tenure of the chief minister to just two terms, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
The newly-appointed chief minister said the state executive council (Exco) meeting today agreed to adopt the pledge in Pakatan Harapan's manifesto to limit the tenure of the CM to just two terms following PH obtaining a two-thirds majority in Penang in the 14th general election (GE14) on May 9.
He said with the two-thirds majority, the necessary amendments could be made and that the state legal advisor had been tasked with looking into the matter.
"The needed legislation must be made to limit the tenure of the chief minister," he told a press conference after the first meeting of the council after the election.
He said the state executive councillors (Excos) would deliberate the matter in further detail once the legal advisor had drafted the working paper and would also invite non-governmental officers to gather feedback.
He expected the motion to amend the constitution for the purpose to be tabled in the State Assembly in November.
Chow, who is also the assemblyman for Padang Kota, said all the Excos had been instructed to execute the 68 pledges made in PH's manifesto for GE14.
"Promises must be kept and we intend to do just that in the next five years," he said.
Earlier, Chow had announced the appointment of Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng as the Political Secretary to the Chief Minister effective today.
